“Always a valley before a hill.”

That’s what the thin strip of white paper told me in October. I was surprised by the simplicity and universality of the message. It seems like most fortune cookie writers are running low on creative material as of late. But this fortune was perfect and appropriate that foggy day.

I needed that fortune then, so I kept it in a little pencil box in my kitchen. I’d pull out the fortune on bad days–sometimes good days, too–to remind myself that life is filled with ups and downs. Sometimes the down days come in bulk though, and it seems like hard times just won’t end. But for every up, you have to go back down. And when you’re low, the potential high is so great.

It’s funny how a little piece of paper means so much at just the right time.
