The Desiderata reminds us that not all silence is awkward. Cherish moments alone when you can unwind and appreciate that the world around you that is buzzing below audible.

Go outside for five minutes today. Whether it’s sunny, snowy or rainy, listen to the soothing sounds of nature. Why do you think those natural sound CDs are so popular? The sounds will calm your mind, and the rhythm of nature’s soundtrack will lull you back to earth.

Not convinced? Before drifting to sleep tonight, turn off the radio and mute the TV. Listen to silence. Your mind will wander, and your imagination will take over. Consciously avoid thinking about what you’ll make for dinner tomorrow or the woes from the office. Instead, think of a few words that will inspire you throughout the day. Jovial. Ambition. Charitable. Gracious. Upbeat. Zen. Whatever word(s) you choose, allow that word to dictate your mood. Make the effort to be the person you want to be.

Silence is your time to converse with yourself. Make the best of it. Sometimes thinking/talking to yourself is the most worthwhile discussion.
